Daniel High School Announcements
Registration for Next Year Approaching

Registration activities for the 2012-2013 school year are now beginning.  Students will receive registration materials during class meetings on Thursday, February 2. Rising sophomores (current 9th grade students) will meet during first period.  Rising seniors will meet during second period and rising juniors will meet during fourth period.  Students should make certain to be present for these meetings if at all possible.

A course catalog and career planning guide has been posted to the web.  Students and their parents should carefully study this and discuss the courses for which they wish to register.  Teachers will be giving recommendations to their students, so if you have any questions or concerns, please ask your teacher or advisor (HUB teacher) for further guidance.

Evening registration meetings with HUB advisors and parents will be held on February 28th and March 1st for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.  Meetings for rising 9th grade students will be held on the evenings of March 6th and 8th.  Students will have a chance to sign up for specific appointment times.  Please mark your calendars with these important dates and help us to make the entire registration process run smoothly.

Basketball Teams Sweep Seneca to Remain Atop Region

Both the boys and girls basketball teams took victories over Seneca on Friday evening to remain unbeaten in Region play. Justin Dotson scored 29 points to lead the boys to an 81-61 victory over the Bobcats. Jemiah Wimphrie added 18 points for the Lions with Shaq Lawson contributing 10 and Tyus Gaines putting in 9. The boys are 18-3 on the season and are at the top of the region with a perfect 7-0 record.

The girls team took a 55-47 victory behind Jennifer Monroe's 18 points. Myranda Parham added 12 for the Lady Lions as they pushed their record to 19-1 overall and 7-0 in the region. Both teams will take the court again on Tuesday evening as they travel to BHP in attempt to remain undefeated in the region. Only three regular season games remain for both teams prior to the playoffs. Their final home game will be Tuesday, February 7. Come out and support the Lions as they prepare for the postseason.
Scholarship Available to Girls Planning to Major in Education

Any senior girls who are considering majoring in education in college should see Mrs. Rash for information about the Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship.
Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization of women educators that promotes and recognizes female educators worldwide.  The local Clemson chapter holds fundraising auctions each year to raise money for scholarships for local girls planning to become educators.  The number and value of the scholarships varies each year with the amount of funds raised by the organization.

If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships, Mrs. Rash (room 205) has information about the process.  Applicants will need to have two letters of recommendation and are required to write an essay.  The applications are due February 29th.  See Mrs. Rash today if you wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

Photography Club to Meet Wednesday

The Photography Club will meet after school on Wednesday in room 402.  Members should bring in their photos from the portrait session to share.  We will be viewing the photos and discussing portraiture and lighting.  We will also be planning our February activity for which we need a large number of photographers.

Everyone is invited to come out for hot chocolate, cookies, friendship and fun.  The meeting will last until approximately 4:00 PM.  See you on Wednesday.

HSAP Reviews to Begin February 2nd

Review sessions for the South Carolina Exit Exam (HSAP) will be held on Thursday afternoons beginning February 2.  These reviews will be held in room 205 (Ms. Rash's room) from 3:30-5:00 PM each Thursday until the tests are administered in April.  If you are going to be taking any portion of the Exit Exam this spring, these sessions will be a great opportunity for you to brush up on the material.

All students attending will receive a healthy snack and will have their names entered into drawing for prizes.  The more sessions you attend, the better your chance of winning!  We will be sending letters home soon to the parents of students whose previous scores indicate that they may be in danger of failing a section of this exam.  If needed, we will also consider holding sessions on other days for those who may not be able to attend on Thursdays.  Feel free to contact Ms. Rash if you have questions or require further information.

Daniel Students to Have Artwork Displayed at the World of Energy

Several Daniel students will have their artwork displayed in an upcoming exhibit sponsored by Duke Energy at their World of Energy.  The exhibit will open on January 11th with reception scheduled for Thursday, January 12th, from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM.  The World of Energy is located on Rochester Hwy (Hwy 130,) just north of Seneca.

This exhibit will feature the works of talented students from both Oconee and Pickens County. The D.W.D. students whose works are included are Lillian Kome, Maddy Fieste, Jade Ferguson, Branden Norton, Stephanie Addington, and Bethany Alexander.  The exhibit is scheduled to run from January 11 until February 11.  The World of Energy is open daily from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM and on Saturdays from noon until 5:00 PM.  For more information, call 1-800-777-1004.  Make plans to drop by the World of Energy sometime this month and view the work of these talented students.

January Newsletter Posted to Web Site

The January issue of “From the Lions’ Den,” Daniel High School’s monthly newsletter, has been posted to the web site. (Click here.) Due to budget constraints, the newsletter has not been mailed home this year. Students and parents are encouraged to check out the newsletter for all the latest updates – including information about “Pickens County Has Talent 2012,” tutoring sessions, the first semester exam schedule, football post-season recognitions, Miss Summit winners, ways you can help DHS, a calendar of events and much more. Copies of the newsletter are available in the main office.

Parking and Safety Reminders for Students and Parents

Daniel High School would like to thank everyone for their cooperation with the recent traffic difficulties that have arisen due to the ongoing construction project.  We are still, however, having a few problems with which we need everyone's help.  Firstly, we must remind everyone to watch for and obey the signals of the law enforcement officials who are directing traffic on Highway 133 each morning and afternoon.

These deputies are doing an excellent job of traffic control, but some drivers have been ignoring their instructions.  Failure to do so in the future may result in being ticketed and fined.  Students who disobey these officers will also face disciplinary consequences that may include loss of parking privileges.  Please help everything to run smoothly by following the directions of the parking officials.

In addition, some students have recently been parking on campus without a valid DHS parking pass.  Some have also been caught parking in the area reserved for the vehicles of faculty members.  In the future, students parking without authorization may be subject to towing at their expense.  Tenth grade students who park on campus may also lose the privilege of purchasing a parking pass for next year.  While the majority of drivers have been obeying the rules, these measures are being taken for the safety and convenience of all.  Please do your part to make Daniel High School a safe place to enter and leave.
