Clemson University / We Do Math!
For rising 9th and 10th grade girls

Challenging concepts such as algebra, geometry and pre-calculus provide a foundation for some of the world’s most rewarding careers. We Do Math! is an opportunity to explore these mathematical areas in a fun, supportive setting surrounded by friends and mentors. We Do Math! is a one-week, overnight summer camp that gives rising ninth- and tenth-grade girls an opportunity to develop algebraic and geometric concepts, while also working on critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

 

Dates: Sunday-Friday, June 15-20

Cost: $700, includes room, meals, class supplies and field trips

2014-2015 Pickens County Youth Board

Applications are being accepted until Friday, May 30th, for anyone interested in serving on the Pickens County Youth Board (PCYB). The PCYB is a diverse group of community-oriented students in Pickens County who are concerned for the health and well-being of their community. They meet weekly, attend programs and lock-ins, and participate in community service projects while serving as role models for their peers. Interested? Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference

The South Carolina Farm Bureau Leadership Conference is being held from June 16-19 at Newberry College. Four students from Pickens County may attend. It is designed to enhance the leadership skills of rising high school juniors and seniors with workshops, tours, and activities. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn how agriculture impacts our state and will include a visit to the SC State House. There is a $75 fee that is waived if you or your parents are already Farm Bureau members. The fee will also be waived if the parent wants to become a member for $40.00. Carolina Master Scholars Summer Adventures Series

The University of South Carolina will offer the Carolina Master Scholars Adventure Series, a summer academic camp for scholastically talented rising 6th-12th graders. This summer they will be offering an exciting array of one-week courses with commuting and residential options. Starting June 8 – July 13, 2014, 18 challenging courses will be offered in pharmacy, graphic/digital design, forensic science, aviation, robot programming, and physics. They will also offer a SAT/ACT Prep Summer Prep course which includes 20 hours of in-class instruction, textbooks and workbooks, lunch, and four interactive online review sessions in the fall. “Working with Benefits” Workshop

High school students, their parents, and local school staff are invited to attend a “Working with Benefits” Workshop to learn more about Social Security Benefits and Employment. This workshop will take place at the Pickens County Career and Technology Center (990 Chastain Road in Liberty) on Wednesday, April 23, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. This event is being offered by the Oconee/Pickens offices of the SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). STEM Day at Clemson University

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Day
at Clemson University is April 18 from 9:00 – 4:00.
STEM Day is an opportunity for underrepresented students (women, African Americans, and Hispanic/Latino Americans) in the junior year of high school to experience a day at Clemson and take part in different engineering and science disciplines. Your must be a junior, enrolled in CP classes, and have a GPA above a 3.0. The c
ost is $20 which includes breakfast and lunch.

"Chinese Bridge" Summer Camp

The 2014 Chinese Bridge-Summer Camp for U.S. High School Students will be held in China from July 17-August 1. During the summer camp, students will go to different provinces or cities to have Chinese language classes and Chinese culture experience in groups. 1. American citizen;

2. High school students; age between 14 and 18; grades from 9 to 12;

3. Non-Chinese learning background and less than three years of Chinese learning experiences;

4. Have great interests in Chinese language and culture;

Dates: July 17-August 1, 2014  
Arrival and Departure City: Beijing

CostParticipants are required to take care of their round-trip International air ticket costs ($1600-$2200), international travel insurance ($40), visa fee ($140-$170) and administrative fee ($250). The headquarters of Confucius Institute (Hanban) will be taking care of the costs of accommodation, transportation and activities for students and chaperons in China.

Business at Moore Summer Program (BAM)

The Darla Moore School of Business at USC is taking applications for the 2014 BAM program scheduled for June 21-27 on the USC campus. BAM is an all-expense paid residency program designed to introduce high-achieving, current juniors, under-represented in business, to the various fields available for study at the Moore School. Students will attend business classes and participate in a challenging team project.

FURMAN 2014 SUMMER SCHOLARS

SOaR Aviation Aerospace Science Summer Camp

Project SOaR is a fun-filled, week-long summer camp at Camp Long in Aiken, SC  for rising 11th, rising 12th, and current senior students. Students will enjoy flights and flight simulations, field trips to Shaw Air Force Base and aircraft manufacturing facilities, courses on aviation history, physics, and more. Lodging, meals, and transportation to all camp activities are included. Space is limited to 48 participants.

Camp Dates:  July 13-19, 2014

Cost: $395 (in-state) and $700 (out-of-state) tuition

 Career Opportunities


The State of South Carolina has the fourth largest state maintained highway system in the nation, with more than 41,000 miles of state highway, 8,300 bridges, and 27 public transit systems.  A considerable portion of our workforce includes the engineers and highway maintenance workers involved in designing and maintaining those networks. This SC Department of Transportation has offices and crews in every county in South Carolina and offers careers in a wide variety of supporting fields.

 

The SCDOT may be a good place for high school graduates and those who have completed at least the 10th grade to start a career. Entry level positions start at over $20,000 per year and include benefits and retirement. South Carolina Mini Camp College
The Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC) will host its second Mini Camp College in South Carolina on Saturday, March 8, 2014 on the Winthrop University campus. SACAC Mini Camp Colleges are sponsored by ACT, The National Society of High School Scholars, and the College Board. The event will be held in the DiGiorgio Campus Center from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and admission is free for all participants.

Admission officers and school counselors from throughout the Southeast will present information on planning for college admissions. Topics will include the college search and scholarship/financial aid process. Information will also be provided on the ACT and SAT programs. It is a wonderful way for students to learn more about the college admissions process from experts in the field.

Tri-County Technical College
representatives will be at Daniel on Monday, November 18, and Tuesday November 19, to meet with seniors and to help them complete and submit their applications. The media center will be reserved for both days. Students will be able to go online and apply onsite. Fee waivers may also be available. WISE CHOICE

Wise Choice is a FREE program for female senior students who are interested in experiencing life as Clemson University engineering or science majors. Selected students will spend the day at Clemson on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 9:00 – 3:30. To be eligible, female students must be seniors, enrolled in CP or higher classes, and have a GPA above 3.0/4.0. Eligible students are selected on a first-come basis - only three per school. PSAT Test – October 16

The PSAT will be given at Daniel on Wednesday morning, October 16. The test is open to all grades and students must sign-up in the Guidance Office in order to participate. There is $14 fee to take the test and students must pay when signing up. This is an excellent way to practice for the real SAT and is also the qualifying test for juniors for the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Free Practice ACT Test – October 28

Kaplan will be offering a free practice ACT at Daniel on Monday morning, October 28. The test is open to all grade levels and is a free test. Students must sign-up in the Guidance Office in order to participate. This is not an official test so it is a great way to practice for the real ACT. A meeting will be scheduled for the following week in order to review the results.

Clemson to host PSAT/SAT Workshop

Clemson University’s Charles H. Houston Center will host a free PSAT/SAT workshop on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Clemson House on the Clemson campus. All students must pre-register as space is limited to the first 80 participants.

This workshop is designed for high school juniors who will take the PSAT/NMSQT as part of National Merit Scholarships qualifying program. For more information about the National Merit Scholarship program, please visit the National Merit Scholarship Corporation website at
